To educate Hutt City residents on what’s good to recycle and where to put it, Hutt City Council came to CARTEL Media to get reminders into 3 key areas, Liquor Stores, Pizza Stores and Butchers as they were identified as areas with some confusion.
CARTEL Media worked with retailers in the Hutt City area to display reminders on product in-store so that when they were purchased, residents could see what to do with it when they were done.
Bright yellow stickers gave residents key details on what to do with that item of rubbish and how best to recycle it. For example, for Liquor Stores the message read “Pop empty bottles in your blue glass crate. Empty cans and flattened cardboard go into your yellow-lid recycling bin. Bottle tops, caps and corks go in the red-lid rubbish bin”. For Pizza Stores, stickers read “Clean me up before you send me out. Pizza boxes can be recycled, but only if they don’t have any food stuck to them.”
A counter card was also displayed on the POS counter with more details and a reminder as they made their purchase. To ensure the message was carried on beyond the initial instalment of stickers, additional boxes were left with the retailer to apply these as the stock was moved through.
This was a great way for the council to share a message to the residents that could specifically highlight the items that they needed reminding about and helped reduce rubbish going to landfill and contamination of recycled items.
